If you are like us, you are probably in disbelief that summer is almost over and it is time to think about what to do for Labor Day to send summer out with a bang. It seems like only moments ago we were planning to kick off summer with Memorial Day celebrations.

U.S. Open:

The U.S. Open is one of the most, if not the most, popular sporting events in New York. The event draws a celebrity crowd so do not be surprised if you spot one. Enjoy food trucks and live music on the grounds, as well as shops including Ralph Lauren who offers their special U.S. Open collection. There is a Heineken Café and Moet & Chandon Bar onsite for enjoyment. 

The tournament will run through September 11th with Ticketmaster being the best bet to snatch up tickets. Prices starting around $68.

The Riis Park Beach Bazaar has been going on all summer long, and has brought food, drinks, shopping, and entertainment to one of New York's best beaches. Catch the final series of of the Get Summered DJ Series on September 5th.  Food and drinks are available at concession stand Bay 9 East as well as pop-up food trucks like Coney Shack, Lizzmonade, and Trop Pops. What better way to wave goodbye to summer than a day on the beach?

The summer series at the Met Opera will be returning for its eighth season this year. Spectators can enjoy performances presented from the acclaimed "Live in HD" series outdoor on Lincoln Center Plaza. Showings begin at 8pm, but plan on getting there much earlier if you want to grab a seat for the screening. Screenings will run in the evening through September 5th. 

Looking for a bite pre-screening? Try Bar Boulud directly across from the plaza for a relaxing glass of wine and charcuterie.

Hampton Classic Horse Show:

The Hampton Classic is one of the "it" events on the Hamptons circuit. The show, well into its third decade, is well respected from locals and equestrian-lovers alike. Because of its stature, the Hampton Classic has recevied the status of "Heritage Competition" by the United States Equestrian Federation, making it only the second horse show ever to receive this designation. The event will be running through September 4th.

Westhampton Beach Festival of The Arts:

The Great Lawn of Westhampton Beach will once again be transformed into an outdoor arts and crafts gallery. The event, in its 8th year, will have an array of handmade pieces including paintings, jewelry, sculpture, photography, and mixed-media on display. Pieces will be available for purchase, so you might just find that perfect piece you have been looking for to fill a blank space on your wall! The festival will be held September 3-4th. 

After browsing through the art, try Dockers located right along the water for a relaxing meal.

Holiday House Hamptons by Hamptons Cottages & Gardens:

The Hamptons is known for its beautiful homes and estates, and this year's holiday house is a must-see. More than 20 designers transformed the 13,000 square-foot home into a showcase of the latest interior design trends and lifestyle concepts. It serves as a great source of inspiration! If you visit on a sunny day, revel in the rays by the stunning outdoor pool that features water views. Ticket sales benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The home will be open Thursday-Sunday until September 4th.

5 Things to Know When Moving to New York City

So you decided to move from your quaint suburban home to the hustle and bustle of a large city. Perhaps its for that dream job or it has always simply been a dream to experience life in a big city, either way the move is highly stressful for many. What can you expect and what should you know to make your move a little easier? 

1. Plan on Downsizing

Life in a big city is more crammed, from your actual living space to the packed subway cars. When searching for your apartment, do not be shocked by the size of what your broker shows you. Unless you have a very high budget that affords you a spacious apartment with multiple beds, baths, and closets, space will be at a premium.

• Closets can be hard to come by, even some of the largest apartments in NYC have smaller closets than you might currently have.
• Go through your belongings before the move- this is a great opportunity to declutter and get rid of things that you no longer need or use.
• Consider placing items in storage that will not fit into your new space.

2. Visit Your Building Before the Move

After you officially secured your apartment, visit the building before the move to get acquainted with the location of freight elevators, loading docks, etc. This is also a great time to find out about building cable and internet options.

• Introduce yourself to doormen, supers, and maintenance staff before the move. A smile can go a long way, and you will come to find that these individuals can be very helpful!
• The friendlier you are to building staff, the more likely they will be give you “inside information” about move-ins in regards to elevator reservations, fees, etc. Knowledge is king in big cities!
• Find out what cable companies your buildings support as well as if these companies offer preferred rates for building residents. Once you have made a selection, schedule an installation as soon as you know your move-in date as many companies are booked afew weeks out.

3. Fees

Big cities and luxury condo buildings seem to have a fee associated with everything. Try to understand what fees you may run into during your move so you can be better prepared.

• If you are renting, ensure you have enough money in your checking account before you start your apartment search to cover things such as 1st month’s rent, security deposit, and broker’s fee. Do not be scrambling at the last minute to transfer money and get certified bank checks….you will need these!
• Be aware of building fees associated with elevators if your move runs over schedule or outside of normal elevator operation hours
• Have cash on hand at all times during your move for tipping

4. Known Your Building’s Moving Requirements & Be Prepared

Buildings have different requirements for moving in as well as logistics for move-ins. Be sure to review all this information so you can pass it along to your movers. Additionally, make your move less stressful by having an inventory system in place for your belongings and your valuables.

Check your building’s elevator schedule and schedule a move with them based on available timeslots. As soon as you have your date and time, pass this along to your movers so they can schedule their route accordingly to ensure timely arrival.

• Verify if your building requires a Certificate of Insurance (COI) from the moving company as well as the amount. If required, ensure your moving company can provide this document. Insurance amounts vary from building to building.
• Consider using a box numbering system for your belongings, so you can easily take inventory once your items arrive to the apartment.
• Take caution with valuables! Keep all jewelry, watches, etc. on your person. Ladies- consider using your expensive bags rather than packing them and leaving them with the movers.

The Best Lobster Rolls in NYC & The Hamptons

With each bite, the quintessentially New England summer staple has become a means to escape from the hot and steamy city to the calm and serene water's edge of Maine. The delectable sandwich is now quite popular outside of New England, with many places in the city and The Hamptons vying for the "Best Lobster Roll" title.

Luke's Lobster:

Luke Holden, Maine native and former investment banker, started his business in 2009 with the first outpost of Luke's Lobster in the East Village. They now have a presence in 8 states. Mr. Holden controls every aspect of the supply chain, resulting in fresh seafood that is sustainably sourced.

The roll is made with knuckle and claw meat only, taking 3.2 lobsters per roll.  Meat is mixed with a little mayo, proprietary seasoning with hints of celery and oregano, and lemon butter on a classic, New England-style roll.

Pearl Oyster Bar opened in 1997 with Rebecca Charles making the first Manhattan lobster roll here, rendering her eatery one of the first places to really be inspired by New England summers and fresh seafood in the city. 

The roll is simple, consisting of lobster salad with mayonnaise, lemon juice, and chive atop a grilled bun with butter..

On Pier 25, situated on the historic schooner, Sherman Zwicker, Grand Banks offers a setting that feels as if you are transported away from the city. The floating vessel is the perfect spot to enjoy the summer indulgence of lobster roll. 

Executive chef Kerry Heffernan crafts his version of the sandwich with Maine lobster with fennel, lemon, dulse emulsion, and boat-made pickles on a toasted bun. The side of
"New Bay" spiced chips is worth noting as well.

The Mermaid inn:

The Mermaid Inn is also a long standing veteran in offering up great seafood. Many flock here for oysters, but Mermaid Inn serves up a great lobster roll as well. 

Another simple rendition, their version consists of a New England-style bun with lots of lobster and mayo. (We have heard rumors that they were serving it on a brioche bun at one point). The side of Old Bay fries is also a crowd pleaser.

Dock House:

Located in Sag Harbor's Long Wharf, Dock House is reminiscent of an old fisherman's shack, but do not let the exterior fool you. The restaurant offers up award-winning dishes and chowders as well as a great lobster roll. 

Their approach to the roll is one of simplicity, served on a toasted bun with the fresh lobster meat standing out. With the picturesque setting on Sag Harbor, what's not to love about lobster roll and views of beautiful yachts?

Seafood Shop:

Started by two local schoolteachers as a summer project, the shop is a great go-to for grab-n-go rolls to take to the beach with its Wainscott location.

The roll is served up on a hot dog bun with celery, red onion, and hints of garlic. 

While you are picking up your lobster rolls, you can grab other meats and produce for an evening grill out, all in one place.

Would the list be complete without the restaurant that is named after the dish itself? Started 49 years ago, the highly instagrammed outpost will ask if you want your salad served hot or cold. Lunch is often credited with creating the cold lobster salad as we know it today.

The cold roll is a mayonnaise-based salad with celery on a toasted, buttered bun. The hot roll, on the other hand, consists of steamed, whole pieces of lobster served on the side of a toasted bun. Both variations come with a side of fries.

The relaxed and casual atmosphere make for an easy seaside afternoon.

Clam Bar:

Clam Bar is located on the Napeague stretch of the highway, on the way to Montauk. They receive their seafood fresh each morning, delivered from local fishermen.

The Clam Bar takes a "sometimes simple is better" approach to their roll. It is crafted from three ingredients: claw & knuckle meat, celery, and Hellmann's mayo on a toasted bun.

Where to View 4th of July Fireworks in New York

We are all gearing up to celebrate America's birthday on July 4th and enjoy the holiday weekend. Some things synonymous with the American holiday are BBQs, picnics, beach trips, and, of course, Fireworks. If you are in the city for the celebration, there will be a great fireworks display, and if you find yourself on the east end, there will be various events and fireworks displays throughout the weekend. 

New York City Fireworks

In New York, the Macy's 4th of July fireworks on the East River will be taking place again this year, with 2016 marking the 40th show by Macy's. With such a milestone, perhaps this year will be an extra-special display. The show consists of barges between 23rd and 42nd streets as well as south of the Brooklyn Bridge in the East River and begins around 9:25pm. 

Expect any recommended viewing area to be crowded, especially the "official" viewing spots as declared by the city. Below are some official spots as well as restaurants and rooftops that offer great views with added fun. 

South Street Seaport: 

The official viewing spot for South Street Seaport is at Peck Slip. The seaport will be having family-fun games and activities taking place before the fireworks begin. There will  be bands playing at the Seaport on both July 3rd and 4th.

FDR Drive:

The city will be closing the FDR drive at certain locations along the east side that will be ideal viewing. The elevated portions of the drive will offer the best vantage points, and access to these will open around 7pm. You can enter at multiple points along the FDR with access-points at Houston, 23rd, 34th, and 42nd being ideal. 

One World Observatory:

The observatory at One World Trade Center will be hosting a viewing party from 8-10pm. The event will feature and open bar and "all American" hors d'oeuvres. With One WTC being the tallest building in the city, expect great views of the fireworks. 

Tickets : $250 or $325 for a VIP package

Industry Kitchen:

Located along the east river promenade, Industry Kitchen is a great setting for views close to the Brooklyn Bridge. The restaurant is hosting a party with tickets starting at $175 for bar seating and $238 for table seating. The tickets include an open bar and buffet.

Mr. Purple:

If you are looking for a trendy setting to celebrate America's birthday, consider the rooftop of the Hotel Indigo on the Lower East Side known as Mr. Purple. The rooftop bar and lounge complete with a pool offers great views of the city. The venue gets crowded on a normal summer evening so expect it to be full. General admission tickets are still available for $50 with VIP passes available as well.

Hamptons Fireworks

Events will be taking place throughout the holiday weekend out East with fireworks displays being put on almost each day across the Hamptons. Some of our favorites our below.

Southampton Fresh Air Home's American Picnic:

In its 29th year, the annual picnic will take place on July 1st from 7-10pm and benefits the Southampton Fresh Air Home. The event has fun games for children to enjoy as well as food carts with quintessential American treats such as popcorn, ice cream, and hot dogs. The fireworks will be put on by Grucci.

Sag Harbor Yacht Club:

If you have a boat, this will be your ideal spot to enjoy some 4th of July fireworks from the water as you dock in Sag Harbor. If you are staying on land, there are great spots for viewing including Marine Park, Haven's Beach, and Sag Harbor Wharf. The fireworks display will take place July 2nd at 9:30pm.

Montauk:

The fireworks in Montauk, sponsored by the Montauk Chambers of Commerce, will take place on July 4th itself. Like the display in Southampton, they will also be put on by Grucci. The show will officially occur over Umbrella beach, but will be viewable from many spots in the area. Consider getting there quite early to secure parking.

Father's Day is just around the corner on Sunday, June 19th so its time to start thinking about planning a special day for him, or, perhaps, a special gift. The atrium dining room features inviting armchairs and the decor evokes a feeling of Old New York. Notable brunch items include the poached eggs and egg with quinoa. Brooklyn Brewery:  If Dad loves beer, consider taking him to Brooklyn Brewery to enjoy the tasting room and a tour. The tasting room is open on Sundays from 12-6pm, so you can come in and grab a ticket for a free tour.  The Brewery has experienced a lot of growth, and as a result, their portfolio of brews has grown as well, with their Brooklyn Lager being the flagship. The free tours on Sunday start on the half hour beginning at 1pm until 4pm. Please note that tables in the tasting room are on a first come first served basis.

Memorial Day Weekend Guide: NYC & The Hamptons

In just a few short days, we are going to be kicking off the unofficial start to the summer season. Whether you stay in the city or spend your summers out east, The Victoria Shtainer Team has curated a list of a few of our favorite happenings in NYC and the Hamptons. 

While we cannot wait to kick off the summer season, we also must take a moment to pause and remember the meaning of the Memorial Day Holiday. We would like to thank all of those that serve in the US Armed Forces and continue to protect our country every day. 

New York City:

Kings County Memorial Day Parade: There are quite a few different Memorial Day parades throughout the city, however, the Kings County Memorial Day Parade in Bay Ridge is the most iconic, in its 149th year. Following the ceremony there will be a 21-gun salute by the U.S. Army at Fort Hamilton. The NYPD and FDNY participate in the march, and antique fire trucks and autos are on display. 

The parade kicks off at 11am on Monday, May 30th at 78th St and Third Avenue in Bay Ridge. Take the R train to 77th St Bay Ridge Avenue or 86th St.

Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit: The bi-annual art fair is returning to the streets of Greenwich village. Browse artwork on display by original artists from New York, the nation, and globally. The fair includes paintings, sculpture, and eco-friendly art and unique pieces that are available for purchase at substantially less than gallery prices.

The exhibit is free admission and will be running May 28-30 as well as June 4-5, 12pm-6pm. University Place beginning at East 13th down the east side of Washington Square Park to West 3rd Street.

Gallow Green at the McKittrick Hotel

Gallow Green: Given the hot forecast, it looks promising for great weather to enjoy a rooftop bar. While we could have dedicated an entire post to rooftop recommendations, we are focusing on Gallow Green at the McKittrick Hotel for an experience different than other popular rooftops. The vibes of Sleep No More carry over to Gallow Green which is reminiscent of a garden party at an old farm, complete with fairy lights and an old railroad car. Try the punch bowls while enjoying the whimsical garden feel!

Jacob Riis Park Beach: It is the unofficial start of summer, so why not visit one of the NYC beaches so enjoy some sun and sand? Riis has been gaining popularity thanks to the Riis Park Beach Bazaar and its famed bathhouse that has been transformed to a foodcourt. Vendors on site include Fletcher's Brooklyn Barbecue and Ample Hills Creamery. Other facilities include the Riis Park Pitch and Putt Golf Course and ball courts.

New York Beach Ferry provides service from Pier 11 at Wall Street and drops off at Riis Landing.

The Hamptons:

On The Montauk Green Art Show: The 8th Annual Memorial Day Weekend on the Montauk Green is coming to Montauk Village Green. Artisans from throughout New York and the country will be showcasing original creations including paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photography, and ceramics. Admission to the show is free and it will be running Friday 12-6pm and Saturday and Sunday 10-6pm.

In Montauk after the exhibit? Stop by the popular evening destination, Surf Lodge, and enjoying their live music. They have released the summer lineup, and Memorial Day weekend includes Bob Mosses on the 28th and The Arcs on the 29th.

Wolffer Estates: The annual summer events return to the Sagaponack vineyard starting this Friday.  You will not want to miss summer 2016's first installment of Sunset Fridays at the wine stand. Enjoy wine by the glass or bottle as well as cheese and charcuterie plates. 

Yoga in the vines will be returning to Wolffer beginning Saturday, May 28th. Some of the Hamptons' best yoga instructors will be conducting classes right in the vineyard. Drop in classes are $25 with packages available for purchase as well. More details and online reservation can be accessed here.

New Restaurants: The restaurant scene on the east end has seen some shuffling around, with land lords charging high rent being one factor. Two notable restaurants to consider are the Topping Rose House and Jue Lan Club.

Topping Rose House: You may be thinking that Topping Rose House has been around a while, true! However, this summer, Jean Georges is taking over the restaurant at the luxury hotel. He will be bringing and complete farm-to-table concept to the space. Call 631.537.0870 for reservations.

Jue Lan Club: Jue Lan Club has been making waves in NYC since opening about 6 months ago, and they are coming to the old Savanna space in Southampton. 4 Places to Take Mom this Mother's Day

Mother's Day is this Sunday, and if it slipped through the cracks of your busy schedule, The Victoria Shtainer Team has 3 recommendations for you to take Mom to this weekend. Forget breaking the ban on a typical, boring lunch or dinner, these events are cultural and will add some interest and surprise to your Mom's special day. 

America's Cup : The iconic event will return to lower Manhattan for the first time since 1920! The cup, presented by Louis Vuitton, is a preliminary competition among six countries for the 35th America's Cup next June. Head to the Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza for the best experience and viewing. Brookfield Place Waterfront will be transformed into an event village featuring a gear shop where you can purchase event t-shirts and apparel, and, most notably, a Moet Champagne bar. No tickets necessary, and races will take place from 2-3:30pm both Saturday and Sunday. The event village will be open both days from 12-6pm so you can enjoy some champagne!

Looking for something to enjoy afterwards? Head to Grand Banks at Pier 25 to enjoy an oyster bar al fresco. The restaurant is on the historic wooden schooner, Sherman Zwicker. The setting is reminiscent of the oyster barges that were seen on the Manhattan waterfront in the 18th and 19th centuries. Great cocktails, rose, and beer on tap are also available. 

New York Botanical Garden Weekend Garden Party: Enjoy the spring time blooms and fragrant air at the New York Botanical Garden. The garden has restored and renovated some areas to have it looking the best this year. The weekend party will feature live music, dancers, games, food trucks, and casual picnicking. Tickets: $20 adults, $8 children. Saturday and Sunday from 10-6pm.

Frieze New York: Looking to give Mom a little dose of culture? In addition to all the art offerings the city has on a daily basis, the Frieze Art Fair is taking place May 5-8th on Randall's Island.  There will be a large array of art with more than 200 galleries showing. There will be food trucks and other beloved New York eateries on site such as Frankies Spuntino and Roberta's and Cosme. Tickets start at $49 and we recommend taking the East River Ferry to get to the island.  

CONTEXT New York: In conjunction with Art New York, CONTEXT New York is launching is inaugural New York edition with a fair running from May 3-8th. It is based of its successful counterpart, CONTEXT Miami. Art New York and CONTEXT create a welcoming atmosphere for both experienced and new art collectors. 60+ emerging and established galleries will be participating. The event will be held at Pier 94 located on the Hudson River at 12th Avenue and 55th Street. One Day passes are $40 and valid for both CONTEXT and Art New York.

Top Spots to Enjoy Cinco de Mayo in NYC

The spring day filled with celebrations is almost upon us. Cinco de Mayo, the Fifth of May celebrates the Mexican victory over the French army in 1862. An unlikely defeat, the win was a huge boost to Mexican morale, becoming a symbol of unity and pride. The best way to celebrate is to grab your friends and some tequila at these hotspots around town. 

Dos Caminos: Dos Caminos is bringing back their "Cinco de Cinco" which is comprised of 5 days of specials (starting May 1) leading up to Cinco de Mayo. Specials that caught our eyes include $5 Coronas and $5 Churros y Chocolate. Check out all the specials here.

Gansevoort Park: The trendy hotel will be hosting Cinco activities on their roof. Enjoy some great views in the sleek atmosphere on their rooftop. Specials for the celebration include $10 house margaritas, $6 drafts, and $13 tacos. 

Rosa Mexicano: Rosa has established itself as an upscale Mexican option with multiple locations in the city as well as elsewhere in the country. Rosa will be offering up a pre-fixe menu for $40. Selections vary by location, with menus being available here. We always recommend the pomegranate margarita! 

Anejo TriBeCa: The downtown restaurant and tequila bar is gearing up for their annual all-day Cinco de Mayo party. It is quite popular, and even Guest of a Guest is talking about it. The annual party goes from 11am until midnight with notable menu items including fried guacamole with tequila and mezcal specials.

Blockheads: An easy go-to with various locations around the city having served up over 6,000 margaritas last Cinco! Specials for the celebration include $5 frozen and $8 shaken margaritas. Free chips and salsa included with any order...count us in!
