2018 Holiday Tipping Guide - How Much to Tip Building Staff and More

The Holiday Season has officially kicked off. With Black Friday and Thanksgiving over, holiday decorations are going up across town. With the arrival of the Holiday Season comes the question on the mind of many - “How Much Should I Tip?”

The holiday season is always a time to give back to those that had a positive impact on our lives over the past year. One question that always comes up, especially in New York City, is how much to tip the building staff and those that are intimately involved in day-to-day life? Tipping is a major part of the Holiday Season in New York, and is a way to show appreciation to your building staff. Thus, it is important to say that it is highly encouraged, but not required. As December rolls around, many begin to get anxiety about who to tip, how much to tip, and if he or she should even tip at all. 

Our friends at Brick Underground publish a go-to holiday tipping guide, which has been circulating since 2013. We condensed it, and put our take on what is appropriate as you budget for your holiday tipping. Remember, these are simply guidelines. There are many factors that can influence the tipping decision such as the size of the building (a larger staff equates to smaller individual tips), level of service, seniority, and time in building. Additionally, owning versus renting in a building can play a big factor as well.

Of course, if you live in a building with a part-time doorman, virtual doorman, or no staff at all, the below levels could be adjusted downward.

Renters: Tips do not have to equate to the dollar amount you are paying each month for rent. If you receive a lot of packages, have a stroller that is carried in and out of the building, etc., factor this into your tip. 

It is recommended that you tip in cash. Doorman, Concierge, Supers, etc. all of bills to pay like you and I- they are not looking for fruit cakes, cookies, or homemade gifts at the holidays!

Pier 17: Pier 17 is a new venue in the heart of the Seaport District. The venue was part of the continued Seaport revamp spearheaded by the Howard Hughes Corporation. The space has a waterfront bar, and multiple vendors including a Jean Georges food hall that is slated to open. Pier 17 has a full lineup of events throughout the summer including comedy and music. Its waterfront location offers great skyline views, and the rooftop is where most of the shows will take place.

The Roof at The Viceroy - Situated atop the Viceroy Hotel, The Roof offers a sophisticated space to escape Midtown to enjoy a cocktail and view. Where to Dine in The Hamptons this Summer

The Summer 2018 season is officially here which means New Yorkers will be flocking to the East End to escape the city heat on the weekends. The restaurant scene in The Hamptons is similar to the city in that some stay season after season, some move to new locations, and others no longer make the cut of the discerning crowds. We have gathered up some of the best places to eat in the East End from classics to new spots, from Southampton to Montauk. 

Southampton

Maison Vivienne

Maison Vivienne is the newest opening in Southampton that is serving up French Provence cuisine by Michelin Star Chef Wolfgana Ban. The venue is comprised of indoor and outdoor seating, herb and vegetable gardens, a bar and lounge, and a small Inn that is comprised of 9 rooms with 2 suites. The Inn, situated in a 17th century Dutch Colonial building offers all the modern amenities guests would expect including access to room service from the restaurant.

Chef Ban is serving up fare that is a modern take on classic southern French cuisine included cote de bouef and roasted heritage chicken for two as well as a salad nicoise. The inside is not go unnoticed with its 20-foot high cathedral ceilings and wine cellar which holds over 2,000 bottles.

This Southampton restaurant (also located in TriBeCa in the city) is run by Gabby Karan, daughter of designer Donna Karan. She brings her chic décor to the interior and serves up southern Italian dishes including lamb loin carpaccio and rigatoni with sweet and hot sausage. The back patio, filled with umbrellas, is a great place to hang out and becomes a social hub in the summer. The restaurant has been drawing celebrity clientele season after season.

The city favorite is also a favorite on the East End offering both indoor and outdooring seating in the heart of Southampton. Sant Ambroeus serves northern Italian cuisine thanks to its Milanese roots. In addition to lunch and dinner, it is a great spot to grab a proper coffee and conversation.

The popular East Hampton scene, which lost its space to EMP Summer House last season, has found a new space to call home. The partners have signed a 2-year lease at the East Hampton Point space at 295 Three Mile Harbor Hog Creek Road. Diners can expect a menu similar to the old Moby’s which served everything from brick oven pizzas to seafood dishes with a few additions. Given the new waterfront spot, we expect an elevated take on the cuisine. The new location is sure to offer great sunsets and views and will also allow guests to arrive via boat.

EMP Summer House

Last year, the EMP crew took over the longstanding Moby’s space and created quite the buzz with its beachy pop-up. Reservations were only made available to American Express Platinum card holders and some card members even received access to the restaurants brand new BMW 7 series sedans.

The EMP crew will be returning for a second year, serving up the likes of flatbreads, bouillabaisse, and family style dinners such as DIY Tacos or a Lobster Boil. The backyard with games such as corn hole and ping pong remains.

Sag Harbor

This summertime only restaurant located on the water offers the perfect combination – good food and great views. Guests enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere with the deck being the perfect place to grab a cocktail. Beacon is famous for its fish dishes with this season’s menu including items such as halibut baked in parchment paper with sun dried tomatoes, lobster rigatoni, and oven roasted chicken.

The Sag Harbor outpost of the Upper East Side gathering spot will be back for another season. The Sag Harbor location is larger than the one in the city you may be familiar with, but be warned that they run a strict door policy. The menu includes all the crowd favorites including the Cajun Chicken. We also recommend grabbing a drink at the bar to enjoy the scene.

After splitting with Gabby Karan 2 years ago, Chef Maurizio Marfoglia kept the original space of Tutto Il Giorno in Sag Harbor and rebranded it as Doppo La Spiaggia which means “After the Beach.” His restaurant remains a go-to spot and still serves of favorites such as Chicken Under the Brick and homemade pastas including squid ink tagliotini. Menu items include a northern Italian influence such as the seafood stew as Marfoglia hails from Lake Como.

Montauk

Duryea’s Lobster Deck has been a Montauk staple for years, however, the restaurant received a facelift in 2016 when billionaire Marc Rowan took over. The waterside location affords it some of the most picturesque views and scenery in perhaps all of The Hamptons. Most dishes are served family-style including the full clambake, lobster cobb salad, and market fish. Of course, the Duryea’s lobster roll is a must try!

 Majorelle is the newest restaurant on the Upper East Side located within the Lowell HoteCharles Masson, formerly from La Grenouille is running the restaurant in conjunction with four-star chef Christian Delouvrier. Similar to La Grenouille, Majorelle is decorated with fresh flowers throughout. The renovations in the Lowell to create Majorelle include a dining room designed by Michael S. Smith. Details include engaged columns and egg-and-dart moldings. The restaurant has approximately 75 seats with about 20 in a skylight garden. There is also a plush bar, Jacques, and a cozy library lounge with a fireplace adjacent to the dining room. The Chef has created a menu that mixes traditional French cuisine with Mediterranean and Moroccan influences. Highlights from the menu include a rich onion tart, warm sausage with potatoes, risotto of wild mushrooms, bass with Champagne and caviar, and steak au poivre.

30 Hudson Yards: The much talked about Hudson Yards Mega Project has another reason to be talked about – the sky-high observation deck that will be at 30 Hudson Yards. Upon completion, it will be the 5th highest observation deck in the world as it protrudes from the 100th floor of the building.

In addition to the outdoor deck, the Hudson Yards Observation Deck will offer a complete New York experience, offering the opportunity to have a cocktail or host a celebratory dinner. The deck is slated to open in March of 2019.

The office building that is rising in Midtown East will have a publicly accessible observation deck similar to that of One World Trade and Empire State. Upon completion, the indoor/outdoor deck will stand 1,020 feet about the ground. Visitors will be able to access the observation deck through Grand Central. Construction on One Vanderbilt is slated to wrap up until 2020 so pricing for tickets has not yet been released.

And although these are offered year-round in the city that never sleeps, there is something extra special about New York in the Spring, when the city is just starting to shake off winter. What is spring without baseball?

New York is home of the Yankees, one of baseball’s most decorated teams in Major League Baseball. The Yankees’ season is off and rolling already, and they’ll be playing all the way through a hopeful playoff run in October - knock on wood. There’s no better time than the spring to catch a ball game with your family. If you plan ahead of time, you can book a family tour of the stadium before the game and get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the 27-time World Champion team and their home turf. 

New York is also home base for the Mets and the team will have a handful of home games at their stadium through the spring as well. Both the Mets and the Yankees are some of the most successful franchises in baseball history. The Mets are off to their hottest start in quite a while and have a loaded batting lineup featuring All-Star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. 

Central Park

Take the family on a relaxing walk through one of the most beautiful and famous parks in the world. After experiencing the hustle and bustle of the city, Central park can be a calm place to lounge. If you’re looking for a fast-paced activity, explore bike rentals near Central Park. 

An iconic American food restaurant, Tavern on the Green in Central Park, has attracted prominent people throughout the decades. This dining hot spot has even been mentioned in popular movies like Ghostbusters. Tavern on the Green was recently reopened in 2014 under new ownership.

The Central Park Zoo is open year-round and encourages visitors to get close with a variety of animals. There are viewing opportunities for penguin and sea lion feedings. This is a wonderful spot to take children while on a family spring break trip and makes for a fun, interactive day of entertainment.

Depending on exactly when your family’s spring break is or when you have some time off, major parades and other events will be strolling through the city. For a flower-filled springtime themed day, go to the Orchid Festival, otherwise known as New York’s nod to the changing season. Spring is the season for garden parties, and it’s hard to think of a lush green space more perfect for a booze-filled afternoon than the New York Botanical Garden. The Botanical Gardens will be in full bloom with thousands of orchids through all of April. 

For a rainy spring day, take the kids to visit the Brooklyn Museum. Relive the glory days by stopping by the new David Bowie exhibit that portrays Bowie’s life through pop culture multimedia that includes audio, video and animations that coincide with various items on display. The exhibit features interactive attractions from his early teenage years all the way through his peak of superstardom. 

The land of witchcraft and wizardry returns next week as the popular theatrical play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – Parts 1 & 2 hits the Broadway stage. What to Eat

Eataly is a huge Italian marketplace with some of the best Italian cuisine downtown. It’s not exactly the most obscure attraction but it’s a neat little atmosphere with some incredible food and is home to authentic Italian groceries and dining. Eataly is still fairly new to the city, having opened in NY back in 2010, but there are locations all over the world.

Located on the southern tip of Manhattan in Battery Park City is Pier A Harbor House, a beautiful restaurant right on the water. With incredible views at this place, the Harbor House makes for a great family afternoon with tasty seafood and some neat surrounding parks to walk off the buttery lobster lunch.

One of the most popular outdoor restaurants downtown is the Hudson Clearwater in lower Manhattan. Folks dine here in the spring for the Southern Eggs Benedict and seasonal fresh fruit. Though known for its tasty brunch menu, this New American restaurant also offers creative cocktails and healthy vegetarian options.
